A Fun Saturday

What a fun day this has been. As usual I got up early and went to the Market for my weekly fruits and veggies. I bought pears this week but haven't eaten any yet. I know they are going to be wonderful. I want to make a Pear Galette but I think I'll save that until next week and just eat them the way they are. I'm making an apple strudel tomorrow anyway.
I had lunch with some friends and we went into a jewelry store and browsed afterwards....and dreamed!! It is nice to talk and laugh with friends. We had a wonderful time.
My new Bon Appetit was in the mail yesterday and I fell in love with the cover recipe. It looks so good. It is Texas Beef Brisket Chili with Autumn Squash. My daughter got up this morning and said it looked really good and I should make it. I laughed and said read the ingredients. She does not like squash!!! So when she read the squash part she said Yuck, why can't you substitute potatoes!!! It really sounds good so I may try a different version or let her pick out the squash!!
Doesn't that look divine? Squash and all. But I love squash so it sounds good to me. I just took a pan of 5 layer bars out of the oven. so they are hot and bubbly. They are very easy to make. It is one of Paula Deen's recipes. She drives me crazy to watch but once in awhile I come across one of her recipes that is fairly good. A lady that I used to work with gave me this recipe a couple of years ago.
5-Layer Bars
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 stick melted butter
Mix together and press in 13x9 pan.
Sprinkle with in any order you wish
2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 cup sweetened coconut
Pour 1 can sweetened condensed milk over top
Bake 350 for 30 minutes until they get brown and bubbly

I love long slow cooked beef stews. Ive not long discovered butternut squash and sweet potatoes and find they are Yummy. Even Mr K eats them who when I met him wouldnt eat any vegetables (I still have to hide mushrooms and onions in his food) I bet if you chop the squash up small your daughter wont notice. I will come over for dinner if your daughter doesnt want to try it, your meals look fab! Mandy X

Those 5 layer bars sound amazing. To top it all I am a complete condensed milk addict. As we speak I have a tin in the fridge waiting for me to pour some in a cup and eat it with a spoon. I like sugar way too much!

Hi Judy!

You sound like you did have a fun Saturday! I envy your trips to the market for all the veggies and fruits! We don't have a farmer's market per se here. Pears are about one of my favorite fruits, too!!

Your blog has been making me so hungry for the last week ~ everything sounds wonderful! I've got to try that potato au gratin and those bars soon! Yummy!

Hugs, Bebe :)

Oooh, yum! I love those bars -- I think they call them Hello Dollies around here. It's so funny, 'cause I just asked the Quilty peeps yesterday if they've ever had Hello Dollies and one of them said -- oh I think those are called Five Layer Bars LOL! I haven't even had a chance to look at my Bon Appetit yet -- {sigh}.
