Orchids

About a year ago I worked with a lady that grew orchids. Her house must have been a like a green house. She would go to lunch and several times a week she would bring back a plant of some kind. I asked her one day how many plants she had and said probably over a 100. I can't imagine taking care of all them or having the time. She was a single woman with not much family. I think they were her children because she was always pampering them. Well she talked me into getting an orchid. I have never grown an orchid but I do pretty well with other plants so I gave in. She went with me to help me pick one out and I ended up getting two. I wouldn't want one to get lonely now would I? They were of course blooming and doing so well that I eventually bought two more. Well of course the flowers dried up and went away and all I had were these plants that just sat there and did NOTHING!!! All winter they just sat around and expected me to water and love them with no repayment. One finally died and I was wishing the other three would too. This summer I put them on the patio thinking they might get sun stroke or something. No such luck....they continued to sit around and expect water, food and love with no repayment. When it threatened to freeze I decided I better bring them in. I put them in my kitchen window and I think they are actually happy with me now. Look at the little green thing sprouting. Do you suppose it is going to bloom? I am so excited!!! I'll keep you posted. The other two are actually growing now too but just new leaves. I guess they heard me thinking that if they didn't do something soon, the trash they were going!! So I guess I will keep them for awhile. Do you grow orchids? Have you ever grown one? Would you like to adopt one of mine?

I wish I could remember what color this one was, but I really don't care I just want a pretty flower.

I think they are pretty but I cannot keep flowering plants in my house. I have no window space. My kitchen window over the sink looks out to the sun porch so I really do not have any well lighted place for them. Our niece's husband whose picture is up on my site today, used to grow orchids. I am not sure that he does any more. I think he is growing children now. Smiles.

see how excited your getting in the anticipation of a flower? orchids are a pain to grow from what I've heard BUT are very beautiful. I would let them live as long as they are willing to keep living. I want a sun room so that I can do all this. I'm really a nature lover but have no place for anything right now.

I know absolutely nothing about orchids; but I once worked with a guy who was crazy about them. He even had a little shelf and grow light in his office and had about a dozen small ones at work!

I think they will do just fine. Maybe the orchids are meant to teach patience. I am not very good with patience, maybe I should go buy an orchid.

Thank you for your birthday wishes.

Hi Judy, Funny we both talked about orchids yesterday. I baby sat my neighbors orchids while she was away recently for six weeks. They were a pain to take care of. I misted the wood chips every single day and flushed them with distilled water once a week taking care not to get water on the leaves. I guess I did something right because when she came to pick them up one of them was sprouting a new flower but the leaves on them didn't look so good to me...anyway. Like I said in my post yesterday I like the fake one in my bedroom the best. :)

I adore orchids, I have a special film to block UV that I am putting over my my kitchen windows today so that I can keep orchids there.

Oh I hope you do get a flower after all that work. I tried my hand at it a couple of years ago and nothing. Ingrates.

I found your blog thru Lynn and had to laugh. I sit here looking at two pots of "dead" sticks now. Orchids are so beautiful, but I have managed to kill mine through slow, painful neglect. I hope that is a flower appearing, good luck!

Hiya Judy, You are always welcome to come round for dinner, though I have the feeling we would spend most of our time laughing! Have a great Halloween X
P.S I love Orchids but I am the worlds worst at keeping plants alive, I usually knock their heads off because Im so clumsy although my poinsetta last christmas lasted ages.

Hi Judy,
I have an orchid (on the porch) that doesn't get much care - but it seems pretty happy ;)

My fingers are crossed that this one blooms. I have a dear friend who has her large window lined with orchids. Her father had them all and he passed away shortly after her mother. At first they did nothing for her and now they are all blooming. Be patient and you will be rewarded I am sure.

Hugs ~
